Toney, 28, is in the final year of his contract with Brentford, and it's believed the club would be open to negotiations around the £40million mark.
The England international has been frequently linked with a move to Old Trafford, although United's decision to spend £36m on Bologna striker Joshua Zirkzee in July seemed to have ended their interest.
However, it soon became apparent that United were keen to sign another forward during the summer transfer window, a need which has intensified since Rasmus Hojlund was recently sidelined for the first few weeks of the season, leaving Zirkzee as the only senior option up front.
