Former St Johnstone and Kilmarnock boss Tommy Wright is poised for his return to management with Northern Ireland’s Under-21s.
Saints’ 2014 Scottish Cup -winning gaffer emerged as a leading contender for the post last month. Now the Irish FA are preparing to announce his appointment, ending the 59-year-old’s 18-month spell out of work.
Wright hasn’t been seen in a dugout since being sacked by Kilmarnock in December 2021 as the Rugby Park side’s Championship promotion bud faltered.
He was previously linked with taking over the Northern Ireland senior side in 2020 before the job went to Ian Baraclough. But the former McDiarmid boss - who guided the Perth side to their first ever major trophy with that 2014 triumph at Celtic Park - is now set to take charge of their young guns after being lined up to replace John Schofield, who has stepped up to assist senior boss Michael O’Neill.
