A thug battered his brother with a broken bottle in a lift inside a Motherwell tower block. While Aiden Oakes struck his sibling repeatedly with the sharp glass, Owen Clarke rained down punches on the helpless victim.

Oakes, 21, and Clarke, 23, both of Aitken Street, Airdrie, appeared at Hamilton Sheriff Court this week. They admitted assaulting the victim to his severe injury in Glen Tower on March 6 last year.

Oakes also admitted spitting on a female who was with the victim in the lift.The court heard that the brothers and Clarke had been drinking in a flat in Glen Tower, but they were asked to leave after the victim had an argument with the other two.Violence flared outside the lift around 1.15am.Rosemary O’Neill, prosecuting, said: “Oakes' brother threw a punch and retreated towards the lift.“Clarke then threw a glass bottle, striking him on the rear of his skull.“Aiden Oakes took possession of part of the broken bottle and pursued his brother into the lift, thrusting the glass towards his face and chest.“Clarke punched the victim to the side of the face and Aiden Oakes
