Huge plumes of smoke billowed above the M6 near Wigan after a van burst into blames. Drivers slowed down as they came towards the Ford Transit on the southbound carriageway between junctions 24 at Bryn and 23 for the East Lancs Road.
Footage from the scene shows traffic cones placed around the van as traffic slowly made its way past. Firefighters were called out to the scene at 1.45pm today (August 13).
Several calls were made to the emergency services by worried passers-by. Crews remained at the scene for around 30 minutes. It's not believe anyone was injured in the blaze. A commercial van was well alight on the roadside and we received numerous 999 calls from concerned members of the public. "Firefighters worked with colleagues from the Highways Agency to keep people safe while they battled the blaze which has now been extinguished.
