Scotland is known for its secluded spots that are perfect for stargazing, but one remote village goes one step further and is even twinned with Mars. While the concept of partnering with similarly sized cities or towns in other countries is common, it is not every day that you come across a settlement that is linked to another planet.

However, that is exactly what has happened with the small community of Glenelg. As reported by the Scottish Daily Express, the Highlands civil parish has been named by NASA as the twin of the Glenelg Intrigue on Mars.

The area of the Red Planet is situated near the Curiosity rover landing site in the Gale Crater. This week will mark the 11th anniversary of the ceremony that was held to celebrate the 'twinning' of the two locations, which was held on October 20, 2012.Coincidentally, due to its scattered population and low levels of light pollution, Glenelg is actually among the best spots in Scotland for stargazing and observing the Northern Lights.

With the days turning darker, autumn and winter are ideal for looking up at the night sky — and so now is the perfect opportunity to take a trip to the area. The civil parish, which has a population of approximately 1,500, is located on the Scottish mainland, close the Isle of Skye.
