The UK Health Security Agency has confirmed a baby died from whooping cough in June, meaning 10 infants have now died in England since the current outbreak of whooping cough began.
The latest data shows that cases of pertussis - a highly contagious respiratory infection more commonly known as whooping cough - peaked in May when 3,052 cases were confirmed by lab tests, but remain high in June (2,427 cases).
So far this year there have been 10,493 confirmed cases as of the end of June - more than 10 times as many as the 856 cases seen across the whole of 2023.
More than half of all cases (55%, or 5,769) were in children and adults aged 15 and over who usually get only a mild illness, but there were a high number (328) of cases in babies under three months of age who are most at risk of serious complications and death from whooping cough.
