Temperatures could top 31C but it's not a heatwave yet, say forecasters

Our much-delayed summer looks like it will pay us a visit at the end of the week, with forecasters predicting sunshine and temperatures which could top 30C in some parts of the country.

Met Office forecasters said a 'tropical night' is possible on Friday night going into Saturday because the lowest night-time temperatures are set to fall only to 20C in parts of the south east.

The exception to these increased temperatures will be in western Scotland and Northern Ireland, which will often remain cloudy with rain at times, according to the Met Office. Speaking in the Met Office's 10-Day Trend video on YouTube, Meteorologist Annie Shuttleworth said: “For the last few weeks, we've been on the northern side of the jet stream and over the next few days, its position will change.
