Storm Pia batters Scotland as 80mph winds spark school closures and power cuts

Storm Pia has hit Scotland with high-speed winds battering northern parts of the country as a yellow weather alert remains in place.The weather warning began at midnight on Thursday, December 21, and is set to run until 9pm this evening, with powerful winds set to disrupt the country, reports the Mirror.

The whole of Scotland has been included in this alert, with forecasters warning that public transport, power services and more are set to be affected.

High-speed winds could reach speeds of 60 to 70mph, with highs of up to 80mph possible in the Northern and Western Isles.The weather system has been named Storm Pia by the Danish Met Institute, as impacts are expected to be greater in that area, according to the Met Office.Authorities in the Shetland Islands have pre-emptively closed all the schools in the area to prepare for the onslaught of adverse weather, in order to keep people safe.Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN) Distribution have confirmed there are 18 power outages in Scotland.

It will be bringing in additional support to deal with any damage that Storm Pia causes to the nation's power network.People have already reported various outages across Scotland to SSEN, in areas such as Falkirk, Inverness, as well as areas near the Shetland Islands - including Baravullin and Glendaruel.Shetland Islands Council said: "Due to the forecast of high winds for tomorrow, Thursday 21st December, all schools and ELC settings in Shetland will be CLOSED. "The Met Office has issued a Yellow Warning of Wind for tomorrow for the northern half of the UK.
