Storm Babet is set to sweep over Scotland and the rest of the UK in the coming days, bringing torrential downpours and strong gusts of wind.The second named storm of the year after Storm Agnes, this combination of extreme weather conditions prompted the Met Office to issue an amber alert for Scotland yesterday - sparking fears that a rare red warning may also be sent out.A string of alerts for wind and rain that cover much of the country have warned people that up to 200mm of rain could fall in the space of just a few days, the worst of which will be in eastern Scotland, with the risk of fast-flowing floodwater posing a "danger to life".As well as this, gales of up to 70mph are expected to batter northern and eastern coastal areas of Scotland, with forecasters warning that this could cause disruption to travel and public transport.Met Office weather maps show Storm Babet moving its way over Scotland in the coming days, while dramatic digital satellite images shows a God's eye view of the swirling storm making its way over from France on Tuesday.

Met Office deputy chief meteorologist, Tony Wardle, said that "heavy rain and persistent flooding" was likely to be seen by many as the storm takes hold, making the possibility of flooding more likely.

He added: "It is important to stay up to date with warnings from your local flood warning agency as well as the local authorities."As well as heavy rain, Storm Babet will bring some very strong winds and large waves near some eastern coasts too.
