New research has found that a majority of drivers are in favour of harsher punishments for those who drive without seatbelts, including issuing penalty points.Research carried out by the RAC, found that four percent of drivers – the equivalent of around 1.7m full driving licence holders in the UK – admit to driving without a seatbelt over the last 12 months.On January 31, 1983 it became mandatory for drivers to wear seatbelts in vehicles that had them fitted.
However, many believe current laws are still too lenient. Some 24 percent of drivers believe the current rules, in which a motorist can be fined up to £500 for not buckling up, don't go far enough.Some 69 percent of drivers think that those who break the law should pay both a fine and receive at least three points on their licences.It comes after calls last year to introduce tougher measures that combat those who drive without wearing any sort of seatbelt.
In November of 2022 Labour MP Barry Sheerman asked the then-Secretary of State for Transport if there were potential merits of introducing penalty points for people who fail to wear a seatbelt. Should there be tougher penalties?
