Second sports pitch at Maybole Campus could cost £3.8m

Spiralling inflation means that South Ayrshire Council will need to pay out £3.8m million to install a promised second sports pitch at the new Maybole Campus.Delays to the sale of extra land for the extra pitch have coincided with massive increases in construction costs.The council had already allocated an additional £2.42m on top of the campus contract to build the second pitch.It had not been part of the main contract as the site had not purchased the site of the pitch at that stage.However, the developers have now told the council the new pitch will see costs increase by around £1.4m.The new £59m facility will accommodate 1,370 pupils, from early years through to secondary school.It replaces the former Carrick Academy and will also be home to three primary schools, including the merging Cairn and Gardenrose Primaries, St.

Cuthbert’s and a local nursery.The council’s cabinet will now be faced with four options, three of which will add at least £750k to the bill.The option to maintain use for both football and rugby, but on reduced scale, is described in the report as an ‘acceptable’ compromise.

A report to the cabinet states: “The first all-weather pitch was constructed under an advanced works contract and is now complete and in use by the school and community. “The project includes a second all-weather pitch but the second pitch could not be included in the main works contract because the purchase of the additional land required had not been concluded at that time.“An allowance for the second pitch of £2,420,445 was included in the project cost prior to financial close, based on an estimate provided by the contractor at that time.“Finalising the sale and licence agreement took considerably longer than expected as
