A Lanarkshire councillor has called for Scottish independence to be put on the "back burner" once Nicola Sturgeon stands down.Robert Brown, the group leader of the Liberal Democrats at South Lanarkshire Council, has long been a critic of the SNP's drive for independence and of their focus on centralising some aspects of Scottish life.Ms Sturgeon announced on February 16 that she was to leave her role as First Minister, starting a leadership contest for the role.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.

He told Lanarkshire Live: "I know Nicola Sturgeon from my time in the Scottish Parliament and, on a personal level, wish her well as she steps down from the demanding position of First Minister."There are immense pressures on political leaders and she has had a long stint in the front line.
