Roy McGregor believes the provincial teams in the Scottish Premiership will look to cut back after spending big to try and hang on to the coattails of the resurgent big city teams. The Ross County chairman, who saw his team survive after a dramatic penalty shootout play-off win, knows a lot of the top-flight will slash budgets after over-spending this season to try and keep up with the likes of Aberdeen, Hearts and Hibs.
The Jambos also had the £5million bounty of European group stage football that took them to another level and saw their rivals push out the boat. Now it will be the Dons who will reap the rewards with that European bonanza, taking them on to a new financial level going into the new campaign.
MacGregor warned: “I am hearing on the grapevine the other so-called community teams overspent, as we did, to try and get in there.
There probably has to be some realism for the bottom teams and that might mean a bigger gap.“All the teams in the bottom six you will find will question their budgets for next season.
