Tucking into leftovers can be a delicious way to be frugal and reduce food waste all at once, but old food can be dangerous.It comes after news of a 20-year-old student who died after eating reheated spaghetti bolognese that was five days old spread online.
The student, known as AJ, experienced a headache and stomach pains and died approximately 10 hours after eating the meal.The food poisoning also known as 'fried rice syndrome' occurs in certain reheated food.
Potatoes, pasta and rice all contain a bacterium called Bacillus cereus, which produces a toxin when heated and left out too long, according to the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention in the US.Jon Kung, a chef based in Detroit, Michigan, recently took to TikTok to share how to avoid food poisoning with his 1.7 million followers.
The chef touched on the matter in a video in which he shares "one sure-fire way of not being killed by your own food" he learned at work.He explained a simple three-part rule the pros use: "I learned to follow the 40, 140, 4 rule.
