A baby who tragically died at nursery passed away due to an ‘unsafe sleep environment’, a coroner has heard. Genevieve Zophia Meehan was just nine-months-old when she died in May 2022 in Stepping Hill Hospital following an incident at Tiny Toes Nursery in Cheadle.
Her ‘carer’, Kate Roughley of Heaton Norris, was charged with unlawful act manslaughter in relation to the death, on August 18, 2023.
Today (August 25, 2023), an inquest into her death was opened by senior coroner Alison Mutch in Stockport. During the short hearing, a police coroner’s officer confirmed the cause of Genevieve’s death which was confirmed by a pathologist. She added: “Currently a female who was the carer has been charged and is due to appear in Crown Court on September 19.” Coroner Alison Mutch fixed a pre-inquest review date of February 22, 2024, as the next hearing in her proceedings, although this could be moved if criminal proceedings go beyond that date, she added.
