The Government is set to announce plans to try and slash the number of prisoners amid fears the system is becoming overcrowded.

More foreign prisoners could be removed under new proposals, as ministers face mounting pressure to act. Justice Secretary Alex Chalk is expected to set out a range of reforms for England and Wales later today (October 16).

Across the two nations, there are currently 88,225 people incarcerated in prisons. Mr Chalk has already signalled plans to send fewer 'low-level offenders' to prison ahead of today's announcement.

He is also expected to bring forward legislation to allow prisoners to be held overseas, in a move the Government insists follows steps taken by Belgium and Norway.
