It's not so long ago that Mohamed Diomande was the star-struck youngster watching on as African icons Michael Essien and Didier Drogba dropped by his neighbourhood.

This summer, it was the hometown boy who got the hero’s welcome as kids in his community joined his call-up celebrations. The Rangers midfielder has come a long way since his days as a boy kicking a ball about the streets of Wassakara in the suburbs of Ivory Coast capital Abidjan Then he dreamed of following in the footsteps of Les Elephants superstars Drogba and Yaya Toure.

He’s one stride away from making that a reality after receiving his first invite from Ivorian boss Emerse Fae for two World Cup qualifiers last month.

The 22-year-old was kept on the bench for the clashes with Gabon and Kenya but that didn’t stop the party as he returned home to be mobbed by the youngsters who now aspire to be like the Ibrox ace.
