Met Office says Northern Lights could be spotted in England tonight

Stargazers in England could catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights tonight. According to the Met Office's Space Weather forecast, the auroras might be visible in skies above Scotland and parts of northern England on December 28, if skies are clear.

The agency said three Coronal Mass Ejections (CMEs) are forecasted, which means auroras may be visible. This is when material from the sun’s surface is ejected into space, which can cause a geomagnetic storm if directed towards Earth. "Displays may be visible across Scotland and similar geomagnetic latitudes, perhaps Northern Ireland and northern England.

This waning through 29 December." For the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights you need a clear night with little to no cloud cover.

Find a dark location, away from built up areas, where light pollution is low and look toward the northern horizon. It can be difficult to see the lights with the naked eye, but the phenomenon may appear more clearly and brighter in photographs.
