As the new school term approaches, UK parents are being urged to check if they're eligible for school uniform grants that could ease the financial burden by up to £200, amidst the escalating cost of living crisis.

Money-saving guru Martin Lewis from MoneySavingExpert.com has highlighted the support available through local council school uniform grants. "The cost of kitting out kids for the new school year can really add up, so it's important parents check if they're eligible for any help," Lewis pointed out. "The grants can make a big difference, providing up to £200 per child in some areas." According to the Schoolwear Association, the average cost for essential secondary school uniform and sportswear items for a child starting secondary school in England in 2024 is estimated at £99.83 each.

With household budgets being squeezed by the ongoing cost-of-living crisis, these grants could provide significant relief. In an encouraging move for 2024, the number of councils in England offering school uniform grants has increased to 34, up from 31 last year.

However, there's a wide disparity in the level of support offered across different regions, reports Wales Online. Wandsworth and the City of London are leading with substantial grants of £170, while Sandwell Council offers the least at £30. "It's a real postcode lottery when it comes to school uniform grants in England," Lewis remarked.
