Olympic runner Rebecca Cheptegei has died after she was "set on fire by her ex-boyfriend". The 33-year-old was admitted to an intensive care unit following the incident on Sunday.
The sportswoman suffered burns to more than 80 per cent of her body. The Mirror reports the horrific attack occurred in Kenya shortly after her return from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
Her ex-boyfriend Dickson Ndiema allegedly poured petrol from a can on Cheptegei and set her ablaze after a disagreement. Neighbours helped to put out the fire, according to reports in Kenya, with both Cheptegei and Ndieman being rushed to hospital with extensive injuries.Hospital director Dr Owen Menach said: "Unfortunately, we lost her after all her organs failed last night."It has been suggested the pair were arguing over land that Cheptegei's house is built on.
She bought the land, located close to the Ugandan border, and built her home. A statement from the Ugandan Athletics Federation on social media read: "We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of our athlete, Rebecca Cheptegei early this morning who tragically fell victim to domestic violence.
