An alarming map of Manchester has revealed which places are 'more than three degrees warmer' on the hottest days, according to a campaign group.

The map shows which parts of the city benefit from trees and green spaces. The new analysis carried out by mapping firm TerraSulis on behalf of Friends of the Earth is based on research about the cooling effect that trees and green spaces can have in urban areas.

In Manchester, modelling has found that inner-city spots with fewer trees and green spaces were 3.12 degrees hotter than those with more tree cover and plants during last year's hottest day on record.

It comes a year after record-breaking temperatures were reached on two consecutive days in Greater Manchester. A top temperature of 37.2C was recorded in Rochdale on July 19 while in Rostherne the mercury hit 37.7C. Try MEN Premium for FREE by clicking here for no ads, fun puzzles and brilliant new features. The University of Manchester also recorded temperatures of more than 36C at its Whitworth Observatory near the city centre on the same day 12 months ago.
