Long-term M56 speed restrictions near Manchester Airport are lifted

A smart motorway upgrade on the M56 near Manchester Airport is now complete, National Highways said. Work was carried out on a four-mile stretch of the motorway between junction six, just south of the airport, and junction eight for the A556.

In March, a fourth lane was implemented though speeds were restricted to 60mph. Now, after testing the technology 'which detects stopped vehicles', the speed limit has been increased to 70mph.

Two are on each carriageway. National Highways said: "Drivers will have a place to stop in an emergency every 1.07 miles on average.
