Parents feel their desire for a primary school to remain open is “not being considered”. The projected roll for Lochrutton Primary for the new term is 10, with two youngsters starting P1.

And that has led to council officials considering mothballing the school after the summer – despite parents telling them they want it to remain open.

Parent council chairwoman, Beth Morrison, said: “We had a conversation earlier on in the year with the head of education and let them know the parents are all happy and the pupils are happy, which is the most important thing. “We feel that’s been completely dismissed and not considered. “We’re definitely not happy about this and we will be looking to do what we can to postpone or stop it.” A report for the education and learning committee’s meeting on May 23 reveals the situation was discussed with parents in both January and April and they wanted the school to remain open.

And that is one of the three options that will be presented to councillors at next week’s meeting. Another is that the school is considered for mothballing from the end of June, with the decision looked at again early next year following the primary one enrolment process.
