Ian McKellen Reveals If He'd Return as Gandalf for New 'Lord of the Rings' Movie 'The Hunt for Gollum'

If you missed it, earlier this year it was announced that a new movie called The Hunt for Gollum was in the works and expected to premiere in 2026. Andy Serkis, who played Gollum in the original series, will return for the movie.
Should we expect to see Ian in character again? He weighed in during a recent interview. Keep reading to find out more… Speaking to The Times, Ian said that he’d heard “stirrings in Tolkien land” and reports that Gandalf might be featured in the new movie. “But there is no script, there is no offer, there is no plan,” he said.
Despite that, Ian seems very willing to return, with one caveat: “If I’m alive.” Ian last played the role a decade ago in the prequel movie The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug.
