Having slow growing toenails could be a sign of a "silent killer" heart disease, according to research. It may sound unusual, but if you notice your toe nails barely growing or at a low speed, you could be suffering from a common but serious form of heart disease known as Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD).

Having slow growing nails alone does not mean you have PAD, but could be a sign.Heart disease describes a range of conditions, with some not showing symptoms, causing them to progress silently until it's too late.

In 2021, there were 7,048 deaths in Scotland where Coronary Heart Disease (CHD) was the underlying cause, according to Public Health Scotland.

PAD occurs when a build-up of fatty deposits in the arteries constrict blood supply to the legs. It is often seen in those who suffer from a stroke or heart attack, resulting in leg pain that can cause difficulty walking, and possible gangrene and amputation in severe cases.According to the NHS, a common sign of PAD is "brittle, slow-growing toenails", the Mirror reports.
