Andrew McKinlay has confirmed that Hearts have gone above and beyond their established wage brackets to try and keep Lawrence Shankland.
But he's warned fans breaking the bank now could come back to bite them in the future. The Jambos top scorer and stand-in captain has 18 months left on his contract after hitting 28 goals last term and is sitting on 18 for the current campaign so far.
That's led to links away from Gorgie, including Rangers and English Championship clubs. The Tynecastle outfit are desperate to tie down by far and away their main source of goals, and have made an offer that would make him the highest paid Hearts player for ten years. And while CEO McKinlay admitted the club are pushing the boat out to an extent, he's warned that simply throwing cash at Shankland could prove counterproductive in future when it comes to contract negotiations with other players, and that he had a duty to protect the club.He told Hearts TV: "(The speculation) is very understandable given how good Lawrence has been for us.
We're delighted with how well he's done and it's very obvious how important he's been to the team, particularly this season.."It's been documented and there will be a lot of interest.
