Lanarkshire MP calls out 'bedroom tax' as thousands are impacted

A South Lanarkshire politician is calling out the ‘bedroom tax’ as over 2300 households in the area are affected.Lanark and Hamilton East MP Angela Crawley is warning the Conservative and Labour parties that it is “pushing families into poverty and costing Scotland millions of pounds”.So-called bedroom tax means that residents will receive less in Housing Benefit or Housing Cost Element in a Universal Credit Claim if they live in a housing association or council property and are deemed to have one or more spare bedrooms.Recently, the SNP conducted an analysis using the latest data available from the UK Government’s Department for Work and Pensions and revealed that 2338 households in South Lanarkshire are having their housing benefit cut due to bedroom tax as of February this year.The Lanarkshire Live app is available to download now.
