He now receives round the clock care. He's been in and out of hospital over the past few years, is only able to speak a few words and can't breathe in oxygen nor breathe out carbon dioxide efficiently, meaning his body is "slightly poisoned all the time".
Good Morning Britain host Kate, 56, who has been open and honest about her family's journey, has said that Derek needs to go to rehab to breathe properly again.
She spoke about a scary incident recently where Derek 'turned blue' and 'choked'. Speaking to The Sunday Times, Kate explained that Derek has a "weird choking" condition that's leaving doctors stumped.
