No one can resist the cuteness of baby animals, but not many people know what it’s like to go through the stressful process of breeding when you’re a pet owner.

However, vets Dr James Greenwood and Dr Bolu Eso are well-versed in the subject and are all geared up to pass on their knowledge. The pair star in this four-part documentary series, which follows owners through one of the most emotional experiences of their lives – their pets’ pregnancies and them giving birth.

Morning Live regular James – who has just welcomed baby Oliver with his husband, Mark Titterton, via a surrogate called Rachael – found filming the show mirrored his real life. “Weirdly, my partner and I were on our surrogacy journey while we were filming Fur Babies,” he explains. “So while I was scanning babies on the screen, I was thinking, ‘Oh God, we’re going for these ourselves soon.’ That parallel was very strong all the way through. “Our baby’s five months old now, and he’s just started noticing when our dog, Dolly, comes into the room – he’s fascinated by her.” Bolu, who previously appeared in the dog-grooming show Pooch Perfect, says he’s always loved animals. “I remember begging my parents to go to the Natural History Museum,” says Bolu. “And I watched nature documentaries until my eyes were square – I fell asleep to the sound of David Attenborough.” James and Bolu reveal they try not to get too emotionally attached to the baby animals they see in the show. “The golden rule as a vet is to not take your work home with you,” laughs James. “Otherwise, my house would be even more overflowing with three-legged dogs and one-eyed cats.
