Dancing On Ice could be axed following head judges Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean’s decision to retire from skating according to insiders.

The ITV programme is also said to be struggling with a slump in ratings. It comes as the skating icons marked their 40th anniversary of their win at the Winter Olympics in Sarajevo on the show whilst announcing they would be hanging up their skates for the last time following one last 'hurrah' tour.

The latest ITV series has received its lowest ever recorded audience, the Mirror reports. Only 2.9 million viewers tuned in to watch the celebrity skaters when it launched on January 28.This is in comparison to 12 million who tuned into the show at its peak, a comparative figure which is sure to be a kick in the teeth to long-term presenter Holly Willoughby who made her sensational return to TV on the series after quitting This Morning. She currently hosts the show alongside co-star and pal Stephen Mulhern, who was drafted in as Philip Schofield's replacement after he stepped down from all hosting duties with ITV.

Torvill and Dean explained they will bow out with a UK tour next year but reportedly were keen to continue as judges on the panel.
