It's a place that has played an important part in the lives of thousands of Mancunians. For generations, North Manchester General Hospital (NMGH) has been the scene of some of life's happiest and saddest moments.

Yet years of underinvestment have seen its Victoria-era estate fall into a tired, dilapidated state. Earlier this year, an MP reported how theatres at the hospital were closed for over a month after a ceiling collapsed.

Plans for a long-awaited revamp first emerged back in 2019, and the-then Prime Minsiter Boris Johnson vowed to rebuild the site following his election victory later that year.
