Northern Ireland boss Michael O’Neill has been impressed by Jonny Evans’ displays for Manchester United in pre-season and hopes talks over a short-term contract will soon conclude.
The 35-year-old was taken on tour by Erik ten Hag after the defender returned to Carrington this summer, eight years after his exit, to build up fitness ahead of finding a new club following his release from Leicester.
Evans started two games in pre-season, playing 174 minutes in all. The centre-back has continued to train with the first team, although he has yet to feature in a matchday squad as negotiations over a deal continue.
Evans has been called up for Northern Ireland’s Euro 2024 qualifiers against Slovenia and Kazakhstan. O’Neill says he has been pleased with how the player has got on at United this summer, albeit indicated he’d like to see him play in competitive matches once again at some point.
