Highland Perthshire residents look to the skies as high-speed jets take part in training exercise

The tranquil peace of rural Highland Perthshire was interrupted on Tuesday night by the booming sound of high-speed jets.A number of residents in the Pitlochry area reported hearing a huge bang from Eurofighter Typhoons miles overhead.People living in Scone and even Dundee also reported the noise.However locals had nothing to fear as pilots were undertaking routine night training exercises.RAF Typhoon jets were scrambled from the air force’s base in Lossiemouth and circled over Pitlochry and Blair Atholl a number of times.Real-time aircraft flight tracking service Flightradar24 shows one jet flying at 349 knots - around 400 miles per hour.Flight training began on Monday, August 21 and will come to an end this week.Completing crucial training in a low light environment is important to ensure pilots are ready to act 24/7.A spokesperson for RAF Lossiemouth said: “The jets you would have seen in the area were undertaking routine training in a low light environment.“Our Typhoon squadrons are currently in a period of night flying to allow essential training to take place, this is due to come to an end this week.“As the station needs to be ready to undertake operations 24/7, night flying forms part of our regular training schedule.”One resident took a screengrab of the flight path on Flightradar24, before commenting on the Pitlochry Now Facebook page: “For anyone wondering about the thunderous sound of jets tonight, there were two Eurofighters circling around Pitlochry.“One was ‘squawking’ showed up on flight radar.
