Highland Council worst in Scotland for public services new data shows

The Highland Council has been ranked as being the worst in Scotland for public services in a new Sunday Times list. The rankings for all of Scotland's 32 local authorities were compiled using 11 indicators from five key categories- education, health, community, policing and finance.

Highland Council has a population of 235,000 and is the largest local authority by land mass in the UK- but it ranked bottom for both health and education out of 29 mainland council areas.

It was also the weakest in literacy, with just 65 per cent of P1, P4 and P7 pupils achieving the expected level in the subject.East Renfrewshire was ranked first place overall and scored highly in education and community, with a laudable 88 per cent of their primary pupils scoring as expected on literacy and having good attendance records.

The council also had a high ranking for managing rubbish, with 58 per cent recycled. In comparison, over half of household waste in the Highlands is landfilled, with just 37 per cent recycled.
