A fifth man has been arrested in connection with the riots in Southport on Tuesday. Merseyside Police said they recognised the suspect from footage of the disorder after being called to a separate incident.

A 39-year-old man from Southport has been arrested on suspicion of violent disorder, threats to kill and a racially aggravated public order offence, the force said.

He has since been conditionally bailed. He is alleged to have thrown rocks at officers and struck a police van during the chaos, which broke out after a peaceful vigil for the three young girls killed in a brutal knife attack.

A 17-year-old has since been charged with murder.
