GMP make more arrests after disorder and say 'we are not complacent' after counter-protests

Greater Manchester Police said the force is 'not complacent' following a largely peaceful evening last night - with more arrests made in connection to previous violent disorder.

Police had been preparing to respond to more than 100 planned demonstrations and potentially around 30 more counter protests across the UK last night (August 7).

Unrest was widely expected, with patrols increased in Bolton, Oldham, Wigan and Cheadle. Shops and businesses closed early and boards were hammered to the outside of supermarkets.

But in most places, including in our region, the planned anti-immigration protests failed to materialise.
