A hospital has been forced to apologise after a heartbroken family accused them of causing the death of their mum by failing to monitor her liquid intake. They believe kidney patient Jen Clowes “suffocated” because her liquid input and output was not measured and monitored which, they say, ultimately led to her death. And one of her daughters claimed: “My mum was not dying when she went into Crosshouse Hospital but died because she went there.“Had I had any inkling she wouldn’t come back from hospital I would never have let her go in we would have looked after her at home.“She had anything but a good death."Margaret said: “I was phoning the hospital and they were telling me she was fine but the hospital notes tell me she was anything but fine but they ignored the national early warning signs.“When a nurses take someone’s obs they are looking at heart rate, temperature, oxygen saturation levels and respiration count.

My mum was scoring really high because of the saturation levels and heart rate.“When my mum arrived at Crosshouse she should have been admitted to HDU at the very least.”Jen, 91, was diagnosed in 2020 with a condition called Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone which prevents her kidneys from emptying fluid properly.Because of her condition she was allowed only one litre of fluids a day which included drinks, soups, puddings and gravy among other things and her output needed to be carefully monitored.Margaret, 59, said: “She needed to go into hospital to get rid of the horrific fluid build up.“I was constantly phoning Crosshouse Hospital asking how she was and asking what they were giving her for the fluid.Did you know you can keep up to date with the latest news by signing up to our daily newsletter?
