'Extremists trying to exploit' Manchester Airport incident, Rochdale MP says

Extremists 'of all kinds' could 'exploit' the ongoing storm surrounding Greater Manchester Police and 'hijack' it for their own ends, Rochdale's MP has warned.

Speaking to the PA news agency, Paul Waugh said he hopes any further protests are 'peaceful', adding that the family of the men involved had called for 'calm'.

It comes as another demonstration is expected to take place in Manchester on Saturday. Protesters took to the streets, blocking tram lines and 'throwing eggs' at Rochdale's police headquarters, following the publication of a video showing a GMP officer kicking a man in the head. Rochdale MP Paul Waugh said: “Extremists of all kinds are going to try and exploit this and hijack it for their own ends and that is the last thing this town needs. “So, it’s my job to make sure that that family, who have been quite dignified in their response to this, get their wishes, which is to see calm prevail, but also for justice to prevail.” Asked what he expects to happen next, Mr Waugh said: “I really hope that if there are any protests that they are peaceful, but, that the family’s wishes are adhered to.
