East Kilbride Rugby Club exit leads to 12 months out decision for head coach

Ex-East Kilbride Rugby Club coach Allan Steel will take a year out of the game, as everybody needed a fresh start.Allan’s work as a landscape gardener, and working on groundwork and installations meant he was away from the club during the week, and his young family, with his first child, Sophie, born in November.Now he will take a step back after a year out and see where his future lies.Steel said: “That has probably been the best part of 10 years at East Kilbride, it’s time just now for a wee break, to spend some time with the family and work – that’s the aim just now.“I can go and watch some rugby, see some other teams, watch East Kilbride as well, and just take a year out.

You never know what the future holds, but I really just need a wee break.“My work just now is taking me away quite a lot, and that was some of the reasoning with the rugby, because if I’m away Monday to Friday I’m missing training .It’s not really ideal.“I’m in garden landscaping, groundworks and installations on the railways; between those, it has been pretty hectic."All the railway stuff is taking me to the other side of the country, away down to the north and south of England, so I’m not at home, missing training and stuff, and that really hit in the last few months.“We just felt it was the right time and with me having a young family, I’d take a wee break from it.”Steel says that might not be him finished with rugby, but he will need to look at everything.He said: “I’m just going to focus on my work and the family – for the first year anyway – and hopefully still be involved in some shape or form with the rugby.
