The Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) has issued a warning to millions of people in the UK. Since June 20, millions of people in the UK have been sent automatic payments of £150.
However, those eligible have now been warned that they may need to pay it back. More than six million people claiming disability benefits have been sent the one-off £150 cost of living payment.
The payments began to be sent out on Tuesday, June 20, and the last of the payments will drop by Tuesday, July 4. The payments have been made automatically, which means nobody needs to apply for the extra financial support. This advisory may be due to statistics published in the new ‘Fraud and Error in the benefits system’ report which estimates that £410 million (4.9%) in cost of living payments (across all benefits) were overpaid during the 2022/23 financial year.
