Little Jack Kennedy has been praised for his big-hearted efforts to help the less fortunate in the community. The six-year-old from Dumfries saved up his pocket money and cash from chores to buy Christmas gifts for others and a festive meal for a family.

Jack, a P2 pupil at North West Community Campus, delivered them to Lochside Community Centre to be distributed. The school’s head teacher, Barry Smith, said: “For someone so young to be doing something so responsible is amazing and the school is so proud of him and for also dping something so kind for another family at Christmas time.” Karen Wylie, the project co-ordinator at Lochside Community Centre, said: “Jack is a great wee lad, and I thought he should get recognised for the things he does. “He is only six and has been doing things for other people since he was about three-years-old. “He saves his money from the chores he does for his granny, Angela Donnelly – who lives near the community centre – and from his pocket money. “She had been telling him about how there are others not as lucky as him, and last year he brought me a fire engine toy to give to a someone. “Jack donates the items and I identify who is in need and, with the Christmas meal, I identify a large family who would normally go without – so it helps feed a hungry family and their kids.” She added: “When he was three he brought us toys for other kids during Covid on his wee trailer along with chocolates to give out at our Grub Club.

And, when Covid struck, his donations helped with the takeaways that we provided for school children and their families. “We would read out the comments from those we donated them to and he would ask his granny why people were saying these things about him?
