Lady Violet Crawley has remained a firm favourite among Downton Abbey fans over the years, so many will be thrilled to hear rumours of a prequel series focusing on the character.

It's been claimed that Downton Abbey bosses are looking at creating a spin-off series focusing on Lady Violet's backstory and romantic past.

Dame Maggie Smith, 89, has portrayed Lady Violet until now, but the proposed series will focus on her younger years - and the actresses who are being eyed up for the role have already been revealed.

According to the Daily Mail, show bosses have a number of actresses in their sights to portray Lady Violet, but it's yet to be confirmed who will be chosen to take on the iconic role.

To put it succintly in literary terms, this one is a real page turner. In pure cinematic turns it is a barn burning thriller. A superbly crafted – in every respect – stunning dramatic achievement, this is the kind of well-regarded praiseworthy adult drama that used to be a staple for studios but now is an increasingly rare bird.

There is the faint sound of a callback to Francois Truffaut in Venice Film Festival competition title And Their Children After Them (Leurs Enfants Après Eux), a sunlit story of three teenagers set in a moribund French steel town in the 1990s. It is an echo that grows fainter by the minute, however, as that lightness of touch is weighed down by a repetitive narrative and the charmlessness of its central characters.
