An NHS diet plan involving soups and shakes could help people with type 2 diabetes put their condition "in remission", according to researchers.
Those who followed the year-long programme say the eating plan along lifestyle changes can help those with the condition lose a "significant" amount of weight.The experts found almost a third will see their type 2 diabetes go into remission.
A study, published in the journal Lancet Diabetes and Endocrinology, looked at the results of a 12-month programme aimed at boosting the health of people with the condition.Under the plan, followers replaced regular meals with a low-calorie "meal replacement" diet of soups, shakes and bars for the first 12 weeks.
Then for the following nine months they were encouraged to eat healthy food as well as being given help to maintain their weight loss.The experts hailed the results as "life-changing" reports Gloucestershire Live.
