Ayr’s Mercure Hotel has closed its leisure club to the public. Friday, August 30, was the last day members could use the facility and the gym will only be available for hotel residents.

Two members of the hotel’s staff have been made redundant as a result of the closure.Apologising to gym users, the Mercure Hotel confirmed it was “not an easy decision” citing the club “no longer being a viable business” as the reason. As of August 30, there were no contracted members of the leisure club with only seven people using the club on a pay-as-you-go basis.Posting online, one user said: “I’ve just learned this morning at no notice the Mercure hotel in Ayr is to close its gym to non-residents from tomorrow onwards.“The decision of the Mercure to take this unilateral action demonstrates little concern for their fee-paying members and far much less of their staff who have been made redundant.

Great business practice from a hotel that is highly profitable.”A spokesperson for the hotel said: “We can confirm the hotel’s leisure club closed to the public on Friday, August 30 remaining open as a gym for hotel residents only.“This was not an easy decision to make but one that, despite everyone’s best efforts, had become necessary due to rising costs and the club no longer being a viable business.

Unfortunately, this has also meant two valued staff members have been made redundant.“There are no contracted members of the club, currently the club has seven people on ‘pay as you go’ weekly or monthly arrangements.“We are in contact with these customers and refunds will be issued for any monies owed.
