A conman posed as a celebrity auctioneer in his attempt to rob a bank, but was foiled by sharp-witted staff. Back in 2014, the man – who can't be named for legal reasons – walked into a UK branch of a popular bank claiming to be Charles Hanson, one of the stars of the hit BBC TV show Bargain Hunt, in his attempt to steal £3,000.

Workers in the bank were suspicious of the man and gathered the fingerprint evidence police needed to convict him. When the man asked for £3,000, the cashier became suspicious and asked him to fill in a withdrawal form, before alerting her manager. The conman then made his excuses and left the branch.

Police were later able to use fingerprints to identify the culprit. Charles Hanson, 46, is himself facing trial next year, after he was accused of assault and coercive behaviour.
