XXL has unveiled its 2023 Freshman Class. The list has been divisive in the hip-hop community for almost 10 years, and the magazine itself likens the genre to a diamond, calling it “flawlessly imperfect,” while also honoring its 50th birthday.
According to the publication, these 12 rappers — and one producer (the very much non-freshman Pi’erre Bourne) — were chosen from a list of over 80 artists due to their “undeniable impact.” Central Cee, GloRilla, Lola Brook, are Luh Tyler, are the biggest new names in this year’s edition, with more FADER favorites such as TiaCorine, Rob49, and Real Boston Richie filling out the rest of the cover.
These emerging artists join legendary alumni Kendrick Lamar, Future, Travis Scott, and J. Cole, all of whom have appeared in XXL Freshman Class issues past.
