It may only be July, but the Call the Midwife team are already filming the Christmas episode of the popular series, and also shooting the 14th season, which will be broadcast in early 2025.

This week, they gave a glimpse of what was to come on the show’s Instagram account, sharing a behind the scenes photo of Georgie Glen, who plays Miss Higgins, peeling sprouts at a table that was overflowing with bowls of the vegetables. The accompanying caption was titled 'Behind the Scenes on the Call the Midwife Christmas Special: Sprouts!' and a teasing message followed that said: “Hello all! “We’ve just got our hands on this photo from the set of the Call the Midwife Christmas Special, which comes to your screens this holiday season 2024!

It’s a wonderful behind-the-scenes portrait of our own Georgie Glen, as the redoubtable Miss Higgins.” “But we couldn’t help noticing a great profusion of that most Christmas of British vegetables… SPROUTS!

Lots and lots of them!” The post went on to extol the virtues of the humble sprout that remains a centrepiece of the traditional British Christmas meal and fans were teased with the following words: “The more curious amongst you might wonder why there are quite so many sprouts being prepared by Millicent here… All will be revealed!” The 13th season of Call the Midwife ended with a few questions – most notably the fate of Trixie (Helen George) and Matthew’s (Olly Rix) relationship.
