The National Grid will pay some households money or offer bill discounts for reducing energy usage today as temperatures dip below freezing.
Energy suppliers signed up to the National Grid ESO scheme will offer money back to customers with a smart-meter fitted who cut usage between the peak time 5pm and 6.30pm today (Wednesday).
This is part of the 'blackout prevention scheme', and marks the first time the Live Demand Flexibility Service (DFS) has been activated this autumn and winter, the Mirror reports.
It also coincides with a cold snap with snow forecast for some parts of the UK as temperatures drop into minus figures. Individual energy suppliers will decide how much eligible customers will be paid to cut consumption, and whether the money is taken off bills, credited to accounts, or available to be withdrawn as cash.
