Boy, 12, charged after huge fire at former Scots convent building

A 12-year-old boy has been charged in connection with a huge fire that ripped through a former convent building in Dumfries.Six fire crews were called out to St Benedict's convent on Maxwell Street shortly before 7.30pm on Tuesday, May 16.It took 12 hours to extinguish the blaze, with firefighters remaining at the scene until the following morning and cordoning off several streets in the surrounding area.Videos of the inferno were shared widely on social media showing the historic building completely engulfed in flames, with nearby residents also advised to shut their windows due to the smoke.It was the second fire at the convent in less than a year following another incident in August 2022.Police have now confirmed that a boy has been charged over the latest blaze and a report will be sent to the relevant authorities.All roads surrounding the convent have since reopened.
