Armed police seal off street after cache of guns found in backpack

Armed police sealed off a street overnight after discovering a cache of firearms in a backpack. Cops swooped on Somerford Road in Dovecot, Merseyside, last night.

Officers on patrol found five self-loading pistols and ammunition inside a rucksack at around 8pm, Liverpool ECHO reports. A heavy police presence remained in the area this morning, including armed officers and crime scene investigators.

A cordon is in place between East Prescot Road and Somerford Road.The firearms have been seized and are being examined by specialist cops to check if they are viable weapons.Detective Chief Inspector Paul McVeigh said: "We hope that the discovery of these firearms in our community reiterates that the possession of dangerous weapons in our communities will not be tolerated in Merseyside."Our officers immediately respond to incidents involving guns and dangerous weapons in our regions and are actively working to make our regions a safer place to live and work."An investigation is underway on East Prescot Road as we continue our enquiries into this incident therefore if you have any further information about this incident, who they may belong to, or weapons being stored in your community please contact us."These firearms were found in an area where families and residents live who could have been put in serious danger and I would like to reassure them that we are investigating to find out who stored these weapons."Anyone who has information about this incident or where guns are being stored in their community, should contact @MerPolCC, call 101 or Crimestoppers, anonymously on 0800 555 111 using reference 23001115115.
